From Teaching to Tessellation: Jennifer Hunter's Journey to Consulting

From a young age, I’ve loved all kinds of puzzles, strategy games, brainteasers, and anything that involved problem-solving. In school, I quickly became the “go-to” for my friends who needed help finishing an assignment or family looking for a math tutor. I adapted quickly to different learning styles and helped others problem-solve in their own way. Also, I had the privilege of learning from some really inspiring teachers. These experiences made me want to be that person for someone else, thus, teaching seemed like the perfect career path for me.

I spent the first five years of my professional career teaching math to middle and high school students. Teaching is an incredibly rewarding and challenging profession, and I am incredibly grateful to have helped grow and (hopefully) inspire some really amazing young people. There is no better feeling than watching someone experience that “lightbulb moment” when a problem they were struggling with finally clicks or a student exceeds their own expectations. Although I loved the time I spent teaching, I realized I was missing that intellectual challenge I worked hard to provide for my students. As a lover of learning, I decided it was time to go back to school, open new doors, and expand my career opportunities.

While completing a graduate school internship as an analyst, I discovered Tableau during some internal training. It wasn’t until a few years later that I got to actually use Tableau in the workplace. This is when everything changed for me. Around the same time, I began to lead the Pittsburgh Tableau User Group to help me grow my skill set and meet like-minded individuals. My passion for data visualization and analytics was fueled by my connections and experiences within the amazing Tableau community. This newfound path would provide me the intellectual challenge I was missing and the ability to continue to “teach” or train others how to turn complex data questions into clear visual solutions.

Fast forward several years and a few jobs later, I find myself at Tessellation. I love consulting for the fact that I get to continually work with new clients and diverse problems. So why Tessellation? There are three main reasons. First, the company values learning both internally and externally which is obvious through the company’s learning platform and program, Data Coach. Second, the company focuses on problem-solving and implementing the right tool(s) to get the job done in the most efficient and cost-effective way. Finally, it is the remarkably talented group of individuals I am surrounded by every day. Just take a look at our blogs or attend one of our webinars and I think you’ll agree!
